The War Widows Guild of Australia welcomes the decision by the Prime Minister, The Hon. Scott Morrison MP for the establishment of a National Commissioner for Defence and Veteran Suicide Prevention.  The War Widows Guild believe that this position will be beneficial for all veterans and family members who have been affected by suicide.  The Commissioner will have the ability to provide recommendations to government and this will assist in providing better outcomes for veterans and families.

The establishment of a Veteran Family Advocate will allow families the ability to have input in to veteran policy development and program delivery, particularly those policies and programs with a focus on mental health and suicide prevention and its impact on families.  This is a very welcome decision.

The War Widows Guild is aware of the impact this may have on families as the Commissioner reviews historical events.  The War Widows Guild will ensure that the appropriate supports are available for families who require assistance.
